Wanda Jean Johnson, 75, of Amarillo, Potter County, Texas, passed away on Tuesday, May 28, 2024. Wanda, better known as “Jeanie,” was born to James and Juanita Brown. She confessed Christ at an early age under the leadership of her grandfather, Reverend Silas M. Murphy at Old Elam Baptist Church in Hearne, Texas. She graduated from Blackshear High School, and then
joined Job Corp where she graduated in computer science. Jeannie gave birth to two sons, Juan Brown and Don Brown, prior to moving to Amarillo, Texas, where she met and married her husband, Charles Edward Johnson. She gained her bonus children, Dreal Taylor, Tim Johnson, and Lashon Johnson. While building a life in Amarillo, Jeannie continued to deepen her educational roots by completing Cosmetology school. She worked as a bartender at Mr. K’s before she started doing hair at Amarillo College. Her number one priority was taking care of the home and her husband. Jeannie was a part of the Dollhouse Softball Team where she played first base. She enjoyed attending sports events for not only her grandchildren, but also those she connected with through the neighborhood and friends. She loved to play spades and dominoes, enjoyed all genres of music, and being a neighborhood legend that everyone wanted to be around. She took pleasure in cooking Sunday dinners and enjoyed sitting on the front porch watching traffic go by. Jeannie looked forward to yearly trips to Hearne, Texas, to reconnect with family and friends.
She made it a priority to be present for those incarcerated. She partnered with many providing, encouragement, support, and even financial help at times. Jeannie lived a full life being loved wholeheartedly by her husband, children, family, and friends. She will be greatly missed.
She was preceded in death by her parents, sister, Artist Faye Anderson; and three brothers, Danny Brown, James Brown, Jr., and Celester Brown.
She leaves to cherish her memory: her husband; sister, Dinah B. Thomas; three sons, Juan Brown (Shakanda Pratt), Don Brown (Katrina), and Tim Johnson (Teresa); two daughters, Dreal Taylor (Andrew) and Lashon Johnson; goddaughter, Rachel Boxley; and a host of nieces, nephews, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.
