Theola Nelson Mathis was born July 30, 1935, to the late Nelse Anderson Nelson, Sr., and Edwina Lewis Nelson in Clarksville, Texas. She attended Cheatham High School where she enjoyed playing basketball. For a short period of time, she was employed by Levi Strauss Company on the night shift, and later was co-owner and assistant manager of Mathis Airspeed. Most of her married life she was a homemaker for her husband, Harold and their five children. She also enjoyed visits from her grandchildren (two legged and four legged). She enjoyed working in the yard where she grew beautiful flowers in her flowerbeds. She loved participating in style shows, but here favorite activities were sewing, singing gospel songs, writing poetry, studying her bible, and talking with her missionary group. She faithfully attended and served at church until her health did not allow her to. She previously served as a Deaconess at Greater Mount Olive Baptist Church.
She is preceded in death by her parents, Neles and Edwina Mathis, sisters, Gladys Nelson Smith, Charlene Nelson Smith, Mattie Marie Nelson Dawson, Josephine Nelson Majors, Esta Nelson Ricks, and brothers, Nelse Nelson, Jr., Lewis Nelson, husband, Reverend Harold Mathis, daughter, Cynthia Mathis, and granddaughter, Raven Mathis.
She is survived by her children, Pauline Maria Mathis, Gala (Dennis) Uvonne Fowler, Caroll Lynette Mathis, Harold J. (Eva) Mathis, grandchildren, Jasmine Marie (Alma) Mathis, Katlyn Nicole Mathis, Crystal Herrera, a grand goddaughter, Dashawn Danielle Evans, sister, Emma Jones and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives, and friends.
