Obituary

Tom Elree Jones, Jr., lovingly known as “Joe Boy,” was born in Barlett, Texas, on August 11, 1942, to Tom Elree Jones, Sr, and Narvel Davis Jones. He passed away on April 13, 2023. He lived in Amarillo, Texas, most of his life.

A native of Barlett, Texas, he graduated from Booker T. Washington High School and attended Prairie View A&M College for two and one-half years. He served in the United States Army as a military nurse for three years, while in Korea, he was a sitting student at the Quan Sun Men University in Seoul, Korea. Upon completing his tour in Korea, he was stationed at Fort Bliss Army Base in El Paso, Texas. He was honorably discharged from the military and moved to Amarillo, Texas. He received a Bachelor of Science degree in 1975 and a Master of Science in 1978 from West Texas State University in Canyon, Texas. He worked at the Veterans Administration Hospital for 33 years (Nursing Service Profession for 15 years and Physical Therapist Assistant for 18 years).

Tom E. Jones, Jr. was a loyal, faithful, and active member of Langston Memorial Church of God in Christ for over 40 years until his health failed him. He worked diligently in many positions as a Deacon, Trustee, Choir President, Sunday School Superintendent, Chairman of Deacons, Assistant Pastor, and Pastor.  He was called to the ministry in March of 1989 and ordained as an Elder in July 1991 under the late Superintendent W. C. Thrilkill. He worked faithfully for Amarillo District #1. Under the late Bishop W. H. Watson II, he served twelve years as the Texas Northwest Chairman of Deacons, four years as the Assistant Sunday School Superintendent, thirteen years as the Sunday School Superintendent, five years as the Texas Northwest AIM Chairman, and seventeen years as Pastor of the Langston Memorial Church of God in Christ. Under his leadership, the church made various property investments, experienced financial growth, and started some building renovations.

Tom E. Jones, Jr. had a history of being active in civic affairs. He was a Phi Beta Sigma fraternity member, Amarillo Community Lions Club member, Society Club member, Naturalist Club member, and Kids INC. coaching assistant. He was abundantly loved and touched the lives of so many. He cherished his family and friends. He knew no stranger and was a well-rounded strong man who believed in the power of prayer. He will be missed immensely by all.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 52 years, Mary L. Jones, his father, Tom Elree Jones, Sr., his mother, Narvel Davis Jones, and his sister Juanita Glover. He is survived by his sons, Jason M. Jones and T. Eric Jones, and his wife, Jacqui Jones of Amarillo, Texas; brothers Robert L. Jones and wife Eula of Temple, Texas; DL Jones and wife Alyce of Forney, Texas; Franklin L. Jones and wife Brenda of Davilla, Texas; sister, Martha Cephus of Mesquite, Texas; grandson, Jonathan Smith of San Angelo, Texas; granddaughter Ayrika Jones of Amarillo, Texas and a host of nieces and nephews.
