Ollie Combs Smith was born alongside her late twin, Dollie Combs Felder, on February 3, 1930, to the parentage of the late John Henry Combs and Vera Lee Walker Combs in Pilot Point, Texas. She attended Booker T. Washington Elementary School. At 10 years old, she joined Countyline Baptist Church and was baptized by Reverend Allen. After school, she worked at Sundial Nursing Home in Pilot Point, Texas. She married Payton C. Bruce, and to that union, one daughter, Vera Jean Bruce Young, was born. After divorcing, she moved to Amarillo, Texas, where she met and married Paul Smith, Sr. She was blessed with seven bonus children. Ollie worked outside the home for many years at Amarillo National Bank, the Welfare Office, and did domestic work until her health started to decline.
Ollie was preceded in death by her parents, John and Vera Combs; siblings, Dollie Felder, Lillie Beatrice Patterson, Albert Lee Combs, Jimmy Charles Combs, and Billy John Combs; granddaughter, Deanna D. Young Carnes (Alexanda Carnes, Jr.); five bonus children, Paul Smith, Jr. (Cynthia), J.C. Smith (Jean), Charles Smith, John Smith, and Ellen Smith. Ollie made her transition Sunday morning, June 4, 2023, in her home at the age of 93.
She is survived by her daughter, Vera Jean Bruce Young; grandson, John D. Young, Jr.; great-grandchildren, Alexandria D. Young Carnes (Conner), Nicholas Carnes (Friday), John D. Young Carnes, and Kenai D. Young Carnes; great-great-grandchildren, Jordan Young and Roman Young; great-great-great-grandchild, Chevy Young Carnes; sisters, Lucille Bruce of Denton, Texas, and Shirlene Scott of Pilot Point, Texas; bonus children, Jerome Smith (Rosylan) and Doris Smith; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
