MICHAEL DARREN CARTER, SR. was born on February 1, 1961, in Jackson, Mississippi, to the late Leroy Elgin Walker and Patricia Carter. Leroy had moved to Richmond, California, and married the late Barbara Walker, not knowing about the son on the way. As a baby boy, Michael was left on the porch of his grandmother, “Momma Skinny.” A few months later, Michael’s dad returned home to gather Michael and his mother, moving them both back to Richmond, California with him. Michael played football and graduated from Harry Ellis High School in 1979. He met and ran off with his to-be wife, Sherry Carter, and while playing ball for Contra Costa College, he had his first child with Sherry. It would be a year later that he would make Sherry his wife and have his second child. This began what would be many years of hard work to support his family. After many years of fast living, years of alcoholism and addiction, he followed his wife, who left a year earlier, to a small country town called Clarendon. He liked the slow pace but hated the place. After a few more years the family moved to Amarillo, Texas, where Michael worked for Greyhound Maintenance for twelve years plus until his second stroke at the age of 58. The biggest blessing was when he accepted Christ. Michael lived on loving and watching his family as he fought a good fight for more than three and a half years. Family meant everything to him. He enjoyed sports and barbecue.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Leroy and Patricia Carter.
He leaves to cherish his memories: his wife, Sherry Carter; seven children, Nikilia, LaTosha, Myesha, Michael, Sherrell, Nyra and Moneeka Carter; brothers, Chris, Leroy Jr., Greg, Mark, and Brian Walker; twenty-two grandchildren, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. He will truly be missed.
