Michael Brown Obituary

Michael Dewitt Brown, (Mike Brown “Doc”) 62, died unexpectedly July 11, 2021, at home. He was born October 10, 1958, in Los Angeles, California, to Katie Clayton and Johnnie Brown. Mike graduated from Brenham High School in Brenham Texas, Class of 1978. Following graduation, he received a track scholarship to West Texas State University in Canyon Texas where he dominated the quarter mile that qualified him for the 1980 Olympics.

While at WT, Mike met his wife Deborah Kay Oages who he later married on August 30, 1980. Mike and Deb celebrated 40 years of marriage with their three kids LaTonya, Marlon, and Jazmine. Mike enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1983. After he was discharged from the Army he returned to Amarillo where he began coaching volleyball, basketball, football, and track for thousands of kids in the Amarillo and surrounding area. He was an active member of the Amarillo Officials Association for more than twenty years. He served as a deacon at Shiloh Missionary Baptist Church. He was employed with the Texas Department of Transportation for twenty-three years.

He is preceded in death by his mother Katie Clayton and father Johnny Brown, his brothers Charles “Spud” Brown, Herman Bolton, and his sisters Mary Clayton and Madelyn “Bunchie” Clayton.

He leaves to cherish his memories his wife; Deborah Brown of Amarillo, his son: Marlon Brown of Amarillo, his daughters LaTonya and Jazmine Brown of Houston, Texas; sister Jennifer “Rene” Brown and brother Ronald Nelson of Los Angeles, California, one aunt Walterine Bolton, five grandkids, one great grandchild, and a host of nieces and nephews and friends who loved him dearly.
