Mable “Alice” Smith Mathis was born on October 4, 1928, in Harleton, Harrison County, Texas, to the parentage of Georgia Mae Mitchell and Sam Wade Smith, Sr. She was the fifth of eleven children. Mable accepted Christ at an early age. She united with the new Prospect Baptist Church in Harleton, Texas. Mable attended Friendly School and Pemberton High School High in Marshall, Texas. She was employed at the Pioneer National Gas Company, where she was that extra mother to a lot of her co-workers.
Mable united in Holy Matrimony to Alton “Buddy” Mathis on September 13, 1947, in Gilmer, Upshur County, Texas, for fifty- eight years. To this union, they were blessed with three children, Derrick, Carolyn, and Jerry “JuJu.” They moved to Amarillo in 1949, where they were united with Mount Olive Baptist Church. On Wednesday, July 10, 2024, at 3:26 PM, the clock of life ended, as the angel of death was dispatched to the bedside of Mable “Alice” Smith Mathis in Edgecliff Village, Tarranrt County, Texas.
Mable was preceded in death by her husband, Alton “Buddy;” one son, Jerry “Juju;” parents, Wade and Georgia Smith; four sisters, Annie Mae, Ruth Ella, Arilla, and Francis; and four brothers, Sam, Edwin “Sonny,” Willie, and Lawrence.
Mable “Mother,” as she was often called by her grandkids, leaves to cherish her memories: her loving and faithful family, Derrick (Ronni) Mathis of Roundrock, TX, and Carolyn (Robert) Meeks of Edgecliff Village, TX; six grandchildren, VIvian Ann “Viv” (Woody) Wilson, Maurice “Little Man” (Andrea “Cooke) Mathis of Waco, TX, Victoria “Toria” (Kelton) Wilson of Autsin, TX, Tomiko “Miko” (Governor “Gov”) Meeks-Henderson of Pearland, TX, Tamla “Tam Tam” (Cyril “Tony”) Marion of Arlington, TX, and Tonisha “Nisha” of Benbrook, TX; eleven great-grandchildren, Dion, Governor, Kendra (Marcus), Monica, Adrain (nnn), James-Robert, Desires, Jamelyn, Cadence, Christopher, Caleb, and Osric; nine great-great-grandchildren, Karrington, Kierstyn, Dommie Harper, Navy, Legion, Brooklyn; one sister, Bernice Smith Houston of Oakland, CA; one brother, Cecil Ralph Smith of Seattle, WA; special cousin, Mattie Sue McClendar; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.
