Mrs. Juanita Kimbrough was born March 29, 1935, in Amarillo, Texas, to the late, Mr. Oscar Hicks, Sr and the later, Adrine Saddler Hicks. She attended St. Mary’s Cathedral School, Amarillo, TX; Amarillo College, Amarillo, Tx; Nursing School, Houston, TX. She married the late Freddie A. Ashley, he late Sylvester Kimbrough, and longtime companion Floyd Henderson
In 1959, Juanita began her nursing career as an LPN at St. Anthony’s Hospital in Amarillo, TX. As her nursing career continued, she became an LVN and later earned her degree as a Registered Nurse. In 1971, Juanita moved to St. Paul, MN, and continued her nursing career as an RN at the VA Hospital in St. Paul, MN, where she later retired in 1979. In 1982, Juanita’s passion of caring for people led her to operating an in-home daycare for infants and young children. Juanita later retired from her in home daycare in 1995.
She attended New Hope Baptist Church when she moved back to Amarillo, TX in 2004.
Juanita enjoyed pottery, painting, bingo, and making frequent trips to the casino. Her love for flowers led her to gardening where she was frequently sighted painting rock stone masterpieces with an array of nail polish colors to decorate her garden. Juanita loved to travel and would travel state to state to welcome the birth of her great grandchildren and assist her grandchildren with care. She loved social gatherings playing cards and dominoes. Juanita enjoyed people and never met a stranger! She always left an impression to be one of the COOLEST AND JAZZIEST GRANDMA’s anyone has met ever met.
She is preceded by her parents, Oscar and Adrine Hicks, Sr., son, Freddie C. Kinlaw (Gwen), daughters, Pamela Allison, and Laura E. Ashley.
She is survived by daughter, Rosa N. Johnson, of Dallas, TX; two sons, Karl Z. Ashley, of Dallas, TX; and Gerald D, Ashley of Amarillo, TX; 14 grandchildren, 27 great-grandchildren, 13 great great-grandchildren, and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives, and friends.
