Johnnie Savage Obituary

With deep love and gratitude for a life beautifully lived, we remember a woman whose greatest joy was her family and whose greatest accomplishment was the love she gave so freely. Johnnie Sue (Sue Sue) Walker Savage was born to Johnny and Rosie Walker on October 9, 1941, in Blossom, Texas, the 6th of 7 daughters. She attended school and graduated from Patterson High School.

Johnnie met and married the love of her life James Savage on June 15, 1961, to this union two children were born Tami Shirl and Timothy Arness Savage. Johnnie loved being a wife and mother. She was a devoted mother and steadfast wife to James Hugh Savage, standing beside him throughout every season of life. Their marriage was a testament to partnership, loyalty, laughter, and quiet strength. She was his greatest supporter, his confidante, and his home.

She became a member of Mt Olive Baptist in June of 1961 and remained a faithful and active member until her health permitted her to attend services only online. During her time there, she was a youth Sunday school teacher, a Deaconess, a member of the Sr choir, and an active participant in the city-wide mission. She was recognized multiple times by the Amarillo Globe-News for her community service and baking expertise. She baked cakes for everyone and for every occasion. She was an active member of the NAACP, selling tickets for various functions, holding signs at the polling places, and being a voice of change in her North Heights community.

As a mother, grandmother, and licensed childcare provider for 13 years, she was a constant, comforting presence, the kind that shaped lives. She never missed what mattered. From basketball, football, volleyball games, track meets and dance recitals to school plays, concerts, and award ceremonies, she was there cheering the loudest, smiling the widest, and offering hugs that made everything better. Her pride in her children, grandchildren, and her preschoolers was boundless, and she made sure each one knew just how special they were. She received many cards, graduation announcements, and wedding invitations over the years from her former students. They never forgot Miss Johnnie.

Her kitchen was the heart of the family. Weekly dinners were not simply meals; they were traditions woven with stories, laughter, and second helpings. Holidays were made magical through her careful planning, cherished recipes, and the warmth she poured into every gathering. She had a way of making ordinary days feel like celebrations and celebrations feel unforgettable. She baked cakes for everyone and every occasion. To know her was to feel seen, welcomed, and loved. She remembered birthdays, favorite desserts, small accomplishments, and quiet struggles. She offered encouragement without hesitation and support without condition. Her presence filled a room — steady, warm, and reassuring. She was the heart of her family, the foundation beneath it, and the light within it. Those who knew and loved her will carry her spirit with them always.

Though her absence leaves an immeasurable space in the lives of those who loved her, her legacy lives on in the values she instilled, the traditions she created, and the countless memories that will be told and retold for generations to come of Our Beloved Sue Sue.
