Janice Matthews Obituary

Janice Matthews, a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, and cherished friend, passed away peacefully on December 10, 2025, in Covington, Georgia.

She married her childhood sweetheart, Col, Larry Matthews, in 1968. As Larry served in the U.S. Army, Janice embraced the journey of military life - traveling the world by his side with their two children, Rodrick and Candace. Gifted with a keen mind for numbers, Janice held civilian roles in financial management and accounting at several military posts, earning respect for her integrity and excellence. Janice was the caregiver of the family - the steady presence who held everyone together with love, patience, and purpose. She nurtured with care, led with wisdom, and gave love in ways both seen and unseen. 

Janice was a formidable woman of graceful strength - wise, poised, and never to be underestimated. She carried both fire and tenderness, and those who knew her understood that she was force in the best way: steady, unshakable, and fiercely devoted to what she believed in. A woman of timeless class, Janice carried herself with elegance and intentionality., Whether managing the details of life or celebrating its beauty, she did it with style, heart, and dignity. She will be remembered for her deep love of family, her unwavering loyalty, and her extraordinary capacity to love. her close friends became chosen family, and she never hesitated to offer comfort, guidance, or support.

Janice also enjoyed collecting beautiful things - art, fine china, crystal, and Lladro figurines - and she loved good wine. An avid sports fan, she rarely missed a game - whether football, basketball, tennis, or track and field, she was always tuned in. 

She was preceded in death by her parents, Roy B. Morris and Edna Johnson; her beloved daughter, Candace Matthews; sister, Barbara Morris Johnson; brothers, Billy, William, and Donnie Morris; sister-in-law, Linda Smith.

She leaves to cherish her memory: her loving husband of 57 years, Col. Larry Matthews of Covington, Georgia; son, Rodrick Matthews (Dagmawit), of Dallas, Texas; grandchildren, Chance Matthews, Nolan Matthews, and Amazing Matthews of Dallas, Texas; Bryce Matthews and Arlette "Dupree" Smith of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma; sister, Donna Kay Morris Singletary (Wayne) of Wichita Falls, Texas; nieces; Ayo Morris Bruce (Darwin) of Mansfield, Texas; Kim Moore and Keitha Westmorland (Jimain, Sr.) both of Amarillo, Texas; nephew, Edward Princell of Charlotte, North Carolina; great nieces and nephews; Lauryn and Leighton Bruce of Mansfield, Texas, Jasmine Joseph (Cameron) and Jimain Westmoreland, Jr. (Olivia) of Amarillo, Texas; beloved friends in Dallas, Texas and Covington, Georgia who became family.
