Mrs. Fern Jones was born on August 9, 1932, in Matador, Texas, to the loving union of Mr. Jimmie Harris and Mrs. Variee Walker Harris. She attended school in Matador before moving with her family to Clarendon, Texas, in July 1943 at the age of 12. It was there that she became a devoted member of St. Stephens Baptist Church, a place that provided her with spiritual growth and a deep sense of belonging throughout her life. In 2001, Mrs. Jones relocated to Amarillo, Texas, where she soon joined New Covenant Missionary Baptist Church, continuing her lifelong commitment to her faith and community.
Fern first married JC Fields, cherishing their time together until his passing in 1952. On August 16, 1960, she married David Jones, with whom she shared countless joyful moments and a lifetime of love.
Known for her warm heart, unwavering faith, and deep dedication to her family, Fern embraced her role as a mother and grandmother, always putting her loved ones first. Affectionately known as "Maw Maw" to her grandchildren, she was the heart of her family, creating a home filled with love, laughter, and warmth. Her door was always open to those in need, and she took great pride in nurturing not just her children and grandchildren but also a host of nieces and nephews. Among her many beloved grandchildren, she had a special place in her heart for the six she raised as her own: Larry Weatherton Jr., Christinia Zapata, Shawanda Weatherton, Corey Fields, Theotis Oliver, and Candace Oliver.
Fern’s home-cooked meals were legendary throughout the community, with many gatherings just for a taste of her cooking. She also found joy in playing dominoes, cards, and scratching lottery tickets, bringing laughter and fun to those around her.
Mrs. Jones was preceded in death by her parents; her beloved husband, David Jones; her daughter, Vernie Weatherton; two sons, Arthur "Spookie" Fields and Jay Jr. Jones; and three cherished grandchildren, David Fields, Michael Fields, and Aaron Weatherton. She was also preceded in death by her three sisters, Lillie Mae Harris, Katie Mae Harris, and Mae Ellen Butler, as well as six brothers, Raven Harris, Allen Harris, Jimmy Lee Harris, LV Harris, Bud Lee Harris, and Benny Lee Harris.
She leaves to cherish her memory; a daughter, Mattie Jeffries (Melvin), and a son, Ray Fields (Dorothy), as well as her loving sister, Mae D. Harris. She is also survived by twenty grandchildren, fifty-three great-grandchildren, forty-three great-great-grandchildren, one great-great-great-grandchild, and a host of nieces and nephews. She will be deeply missed by all who were blessed to know her.
