On May 26, 2022, our Rock passed away. Elmer was born in Breckenridge Texas on January 10, 1943. To Elmer Polk and Lena B. Bennett Smith. Lucky attended Booker T. Washington School in Breckenridge Texas, grades 1 through 12. There he was an excellent student that carried excitement and enthusiasm in Art, Science, Music and Basketball; his jersey #00. In high school Elmer and his classmates started their first band The Creators.
Lucky was a renowned bass guitarist he played in bands in Amarillo before he moved his family to Detroit Michigan and started playing with Tyrone Davis. Elmer toured the world with Tyrone and one of his greatest accomplishments was playing on the song Turn Back the Hands of Time - you can hear Lucky showing out on his bass. In the 1960’s while in Detroit he worked for Fisher Body and General Motors. Elmer "Loved" to fish, and his love for the Dallas cowboys never failed. He was also a fanatic about old classic cars. Elmer owned and operated Elmer’s Detail Shop behind Pete Kia on 6th in Amarillo, Texas.
Elmer "Uncle Lucky" gave his life to Christ at a young age attending Williamson Chapel CME Church in Breckenridge Texas. In 2006 Elmer totally surrendered to Christ under the leadership of Bible Way Fellowship Pastor Mike Williams and later under the leadership of Pastor Benny Anderson at New Hope Baptist Church Amarillo Texas, until the Lord called him home. Uncle Lucky loved his family; his church; and all his friends.
Elmer is preceded in death by his grandparents Hammond and Maggie Bennett his father Elmer Polk Sr. his mother Lena B. Bennett Smith, brother Floyd H. Hall, sister Betty L. Matthews and husband Robert Matthews, brothers in law Leon Smith Sr., Richard Willams Sr.; nephews: Leon “Bubba” Smith and Jeffrey Alexander Smith Sr., and niece Cooter J Harris Rivers.
Elmer leaves to cherish his memory; wife Joyce Landers Smith of Greensboro, NC; sons Elmer Smith Jr. (Teresa), Cedric R Smith, Doc Smith and mother Doris Smith all of Amarillo Texas; daughters: Denisia R. Smith, KaSonya S Miller (Jimmy), Lena B. Smith all of Greensboro, NC; 8 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren; his brother: Fred J Smith and sister: Gwendolyn Smith Williams of Amarillo and a host of nieces and nephews, and a special niece Melva D Smith.
