Dorothy Jernigan Obituary

Dorothy Jernigan, age 93, passed away peacefully surrounded by her loved ones. She lived a long and beautiful life filled with love, devotion to her family, and a quiet strength that touched everyone who knew her. Dorothy’s life was defined by the care she gave to others and the love she shared so freely.

Dorothy met the love of her life, LD Jernigan, in East Texas. Their story was one that family members would often smile about. As young sweethearts deeply in love, the two ran away together to Lamesa, Texas, and were married in Lovington, New Mexico in 1950. From that day forward they built a life together grounded in love, resilience, and family. Their marriage was the beginning of a legacy that would span generations.

Dorothy devoted her life to being a loving wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. As a stay-at-home mom, she poured her heart into raising her children and creating a home filled with warmth, guidance, and unconditional love. She had a way of making everyone feel safe, welcomed, and cared for. Her family was the center of her world, and she carried that responsibility with pride, patience, and grace.

One of Dorothy’s greatest joys was working in her garden. She spent countless peaceful hours tending to her flowers and plants, carefully nurturing them and watching them grow. Her yard became something many admired, and friends, neighbors, and family often complimented how beautiful it was. The care she gave her garden reflected the way she lived her life, with patience, dedication, and a deep appreciation for the beauty in simple things.

Dorothy was preceded in death by her husband, LD Jernigan; her parents, Naomi and Bunny Lee Fletcher; three sons, Delbert Jernigan, SGT. Lonnie Jernigan, and Wade Lee Jernigan; six brothers, L.B. Fletcher, Prentice Fletcher, Pete Fletcher, L.C. Fletcher, Jamee Roy Fletcher, and Bunny Lee Fletcher Jr.; and two sisters, Jewell Williams and Lenelle Russell.

She leaves to cherish her memory of her son, Jimmy Jernigan (Denise) of Amarillo, Texas; and her daughters, Helen Griffin (Gregory) of Dallas, Texas, Stella Jernigan of Houston, Texas, Della McRae of Amarillo, Texas, Ellavena Jernigan of Arlington, Texas, and Patricia Buckingham of Amarillo, Texas.

Dorothy also leaves behind 18 grandchildren; 35 great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, extended family members, friends, and neighbors who were blessed to know and love her.

To her family, Dorothy was the heart of everything. She was a steady presence, a source of wisdom, comfort, and strength. Her love shaped generations, and the values she passed down will continue to live on through the family she cherished so deeply. While she will be greatly missed, the memories she created and the love she gave will remain forever in the hearts of those who were blessed to know her.

Dorothy Jernigan’s life was a testament to love, family, and quiet strength. Her legacy will continue to bloom through the many lives she touched, much like the beautiful gardens she cared for so lovingly.
