We sorrowfully announce the passing of Delphine Jordan Lamar, a beloved mother, grandmother, devoted wife, and cherished friend; on October 16, 2024, at the age of 85. She was born on May 22, 1939, in Poplar Bluff, Missouri, and was the daughter of Georgia M. Jordan and John Henry Jordan.
Delphine was married to Donald Ray Lamar, whom she affectionately called “Sweetie” for 56 wonderful years. He was the center of her heart and together they raised four children, Donna Denise Lamar, Donald Ray Lamar II, (Elouise), Dale Anthony Lamar and Derrick HR Lamar, (BreAnn), instilling in them the values of love, kindness, and perseverance.
A lifelong educator, Delphine dedicated her career to nurturing young minds and inspiring her students. Her passion for education was matched only by her commitment to her community. As a proud member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, she actively engaged in numerous initiatives, empowering those around her. Her faith was a cornerstone of her life, and she was deeply involved in the women’s mission at Mt. Zion Baptist Church, where her spirit and compassion touched many.
Delphine was known for her sweet nature, but those who knew her best also recognized her adventurous spirit. She was an avid gardener, finding joy in every blooming flower, and an astute observer of life’s little details. Her family will forever remember her relentless pursuit of cookies, cakes, fruits, and chocolate, as well as her love of music. Old Town Road by Lil Nas X was one of her favorite songs and the cause of many spontaneous dance moves. While Jerry Butler’s Your Precious Love would have her swaying in her seat, swept away by beauty and memories.
Mama could laugh and joke, but she could also sit with you and let silence measure the moment and deliver healing or solace. We will miss her but know that she is never far away.
She is survived by her children, and beloved grandchildren; Dierra LaRay Lamar, Deasia Lamar Ross, Mia Joyner Lamar, Meagan and Nathaniel Oages; and of course, Dexter, the family dog. Delphine Lamar leaves behind a legacy of love, joy, and inspiration. She will be remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing her.
