Deacon Weldon Watson Obituary

Weldon Griffieth Watson (Sonny Boy) was the oldest of four, born in Roxton, Texas, to the late Andrew Jackson Watson and Louella Frances Watson on August 17, 1930. He received his education from Roxton High School (now H.G. Smith HS). While in Roxton, Weldon was a member of St. Paul Baptist Church where Rev. T.J. Houston was pastor.  In 1948, Weldon moved to Amarillo where he joined Mount Zion Baptist Church and later Shiloh Missionary Baptist Church under Rev. M.J. Stewart, where he was a founding member. After serving for a number of years at Shiloh, Deacon Watson joined Mt. Olive Missionary Baptist Church under the leadership of Pastor Morris Mitchell Sr., and he served faithfully as Chairman of the Deacon Board and a member of the brotherhood choir.

On October 25, 1953, Deacon Watson married Bobbie Lois Brown. To this union, six children were born; Cheryl Joyce Watson of Amarillo, Dennis Weldon Watson (Donnette) of Guymon, OK, Frances Tebora Watson of Amarillo, Lora Ann Watson of Amarillo, Lisa Lynette Williams (Eugene) of Denton, and Terrance Dewayne Watson (Paulina) of Amarillo.

Weldon was a licensed mechanic employed by A to Z Tire Company and Car City. He also was Retread Manager at Firestone Tire Company where he retired. Later, he drove trucks for E.L. Jones & Sons Trucking Company and Affiliated Foods Inc. A few of his pastimes included reading, writing, singing, playing dominos, picking his guitar, watching sports and was very passionate about studying the Bible. He also loved traveling, not by air or water, but by road. Weldon’s love for music was unmatched as he was reared in a family of musicians. He used his gift to sing bass, traveling near and far, with the Freedom Gospel Singers for many years. Most importantly, Weldon LOVED….his Lord and Savior, his family, his friends, and Mt. Olive Missionary Baptist Church.

Weldon was preceded in death by his parents Andrew and Louella Watson and his sister Elora Beard. His memories and legacy will be cherished by his six children, a sister, Hattie Pearl Lewis (Luther) of Kansas City, MO, a brother, Roy Gene Watson of Kansas City, MO; his grandchildren, Kaelan Deshane Watson, Tarick Griffieth Watson, Tyson Gerrard Watson, David Breon Brooks (Tiana), Andrew Daulton Watson, Tremayne DeVante Watson, Alisa Gené Williams, and Tavia Deliana Watson; his great grandchildren, Neycie Watson, K’hari Watson, Kambrian Johnson, Tailar Smith, Tazhia Watson, Tarick Watson, Tyrick Watson, McKai Watson, Jalen Watson, Tyrique T. Brooks, Terrance T. Brooks, Londyn D. Shearer, Tristen D. Brooks, and Cashten Watson; a host of nieces and nephews; and his dear lifetime friend, Clifford Lovejoy.
