Bobby Hughes Obituary

Bobby Glen Hughes was born to the loving union of Sun Hughes and Daisy Mae Burns-Duncan on May 11, 1935, in Omaha, Texas. He received the Lord as his savior at the tender age of fifteen. At the age of nineteen, he volunteered to serve in the United States Army. He was assigned to Germany, serving proudly, until he sustained a devastating knee injury. After two years of service, he was medically discharged thereby receiving an Honorable Discharge. He returned to the United States subsequently, making Amarillo, Texas his home. Shortly after his arrival, cupid’s arrow struck his heart revealing Delores Marie Brown to him. In 1954, they paired their lives together. For sixty-six years, they created the greatest love story anyone could ever imagined. Sure, there were rough times, but their love endured. To this union eight children were born, Dannette Joyce Ford (Ray), Greg “Plucky” Brown, Beverly Ann Hughes, Debora Ann Hewitt (Pastor Ed), Lois Ford, Gary Hughes, Gwen Fields, (Terry), and Tammy Hughes.

He has one surviving sister, Renee Campbell (Lester).

To his memory, he leaves his children; twenty-six grandchildren, Tameka, Tranetra, Toria, Ashley, Dwight, Tiffany, Candace, Ebony, Michelle, Jermaine, Monique, Ashauntae, Brittany,
Bridget, Zachary, Cedric, Whitney, D.J., Talesha, Patrice, Eboni, Carlin Jr., Cahlil, Calum, Darius, and Tayvon; eighty-six great- grandchildren; fifty-four great-great-grandchildren; niece, Nikki; great-niece, Nazaya and great-nephew, Damarion.

Bobby was preceded in death by his mother and father, his wife of sixty-six years, Delores; brother, Jay-Roy; son, Darryl and grandson, Wesley Ford. Bobby was a super Dallas Cowboys fan, on Sundays during winter and fall if the Cowboys were on television, Bobby was there, and he would keep the remote in his hand to make sure the channel did not change. The same could be said for the Texas Rangers (baseball), the Texas Longhorns (college football), and any basketball. When he had a ride, he’d go fishing. He was a patriarch in every sense of the word to his family. Whether it was taking in a football game with his kids or grand kids, developing nicknames like Tricky, Wild-Wild or Lil Green Banana and the like for his large family, or giving advice to anyone that appeared to be troubled, that is what Bobby did. He’d share that sense of humor with his grandchildren, often teasing them about “wearing white sox,” his way of saying; “you need lotion on your ankles.” Whether he was whispering words of encouragement and strength to his daughter’s ear or assisting his daughter changing a headlight on her automobile he demonstrated their needs were above his own. For sixty-six years, he and his “Pretty Baby” Delores, became Grandad and Nanny to “all” who knew them. If someone was down, he would display that quick wit to lift them up. His final saying to his kids was “see you later alligator.” The response he looked for was “after awhile crocodile”.
