Sister Beth Lillian Mayberry, the fifth of five children, was born on November 9, 1928 to James and Nancy Henry in Kilgore, Texas. Growing up she attended Mt. Piskee Elementary School and North Chapel High School in Kilgore. Following graduation, Sister Mayberry moved to Amarillo in the early 1950’s. After a while in Amarillo, she met and married her husband of 47 years, Mr. Loyd Mayberry and they reared four sons.
Upon moving to Amarillo, Sister Mayberry united with the Jenkins Chapel Baptist Church, where she remained a loyal and faithful member of the church for some 65 years. She served the church under the pastorate of six pastors, beginning with the Late Reverend J. W. Wade until our current pastor. Sister Mayberry supported every pastor and every annual day of the church with her tithes and offerings without fail.
Sister Mayberry earned an Associate Degree in Nursing from Amarillo College; and received her B.A. Degree from WT School of Nursing. She worked as a nurse at St. Anthony’s Hospital for over 40 years. Retired and taught as an assistant at Amarillo College; then, became the Program Director for Continuing Education for CNAs at Amarillo College. Sister Mayberry finally retired completely from nursing at the age of 85.
She was a former member of the North Star-Electa Order of the Eastern Star and served as a volunteer for the Hilltop Senior Citizens, often serving to take blood pressure for elder citizens. Sister Mayberry was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and citizen of the community; and she loved gardening.
Sister Mayberry was preceded in death by her parents, her husband and one son, Charles Mayberry; two brothers, Lester, and James Neal Henry; and, one sister, Josephine Johnson.
She leaves to cherish her memories three sons: James (Maria) Mayberry, Dwight (Felicia) Mayberry, and Allen (Rita) Mayberry, all of Amarillo; one sister, Catherine Waldon, Wichita Falls; eight grandchildren: Vanalta, James, Karl, Celina, Ayofini, Gina, Dwight, Jr., and Nancy; ten great-grandchildren: Elisha, Takia, Jasmine, Alonzo, Dominik, Ayanna, Savannah, Rose, Jasmine, and Natrien and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
