Mary Mathis Obituary

Mary Mathis was born March 27, 1941, in Lubbock, TX, to Luther Burns and Hanna B. Freeman. She attended Dunbar High School, where she was in band as a majorette. She moved to Pampa, TX, in 1967, where she met her husband, whom she married September 18, 1967. She was a faithful member at Open Door Church of Christ. She worked for Wilson Jewelry from 1972 to 1975, Herman Hospital in Houston, the Mary Foundation for six years, and she helped new startup restaurants.
She is preceded in death by: her parents, Luther Burns and Hanna Freeman; son, Billie Joe Dora; daughter, Shola Mathis; brothers, Larry Freeman and Michael Freeman; sisters, Rita Kay and Mattie Ruth Taylor; and great-granddaughter, Eslyon Fields.
She leaves to cherish her memories: her husband, Earnest Mathis, Jr.; daughter, Bridgett (Esley) Fields; sons, John “JJ” Mathis and Kedrick Grays; sister, Leatha Mae Burns; grandchildren, Cola, Destiney, Shykela, James, Escence, Esley Jr., and John Jr.; a host of nieces and nephews from Lubbock and Dallas, TX; and many cousins and special friends.
